The phone rang at 6am this morning… hubby’s phone. Usually, his phone rings at that time and it’s work calling about some crap that can’t wait until at least the sun is up. That it rang was not a big deal, no. It was the voice I could over-hear that made all the difference in the world. It was hubby’s Dad, my father-in-law … and without hearing what he said specifically I knew exactly why he had called and lay there face up, waiting, in bed, with dread.
It’s Thanksgiving Day and while it isn’t “Happy” by any stretch of the imagination… I am being thankful. The ‘for what’ is simple: I am thankful that I met this man and got to spend even the little time I did spend with him before he walked on… because this man opened his arms and welcomed me without question. With a quiet look and a quiet smile and a “Welcome to the family” demeanor, he immediately was also MY grandfather.
I never knew a grandfather – both my parents’ fathers had passed before I knew myself. So for me, this was a dream come true. And … as little as I knew of him, for the short time that I DID get to spend with him, talk with him …. he touched me.
So today, I am thankful for Grandpa Wilson. Thank you. The world is not the same without you, but I know that your mark will always be here and you will be remembered, and missed forever.
